# Addresses

An address is an email address a connected mailbox has seen, such as ana@acme.com, with the name
it came with. [Messages](/docs/apps/inbox/messages) are from and to addresses.

## How it works

The sync adds an address the first time a mailbox meets it. Each connection keeps its own
addresses, so the same email address in two mailboxes is two records. An address is not a person:
Continual matches messages to your people by email address separately.
